Several years ago, I read Jim Collins’ seminal book, Good to Great. His idea of “Turning the Flywheel” has stuck with me ever since. The idea is that much like turning a heavy flywheel, initial efforts may seem slow and difficult. But with consistent and disciplined action, momentum builds and…eventually, there is a breakthrough.
The flywheel I see in the utility industry is the steady improvement of GPS and GIS and increasing integration of the two in decision making. As companies continue to update these systems and add new data, operations become better as well as more efficient. This ongoing effort, while likely difficult at first, boosts safety, lowers costs, and strengthens operators’ reputations. For some, the breakthrough is already happening; for others it will come with continued investment and effort. This future is already here, it’s just not evenly distributed.
